A full-time equivalent (FTE) is a unit that expresses work as the number of full-time staff it would take. One FTE is one person working full-time hours. Automation benefits are often stated in FTEs freed, but freed FTEs only become a saving if the time is used for other work, a hire is avoided or headcount changes.
