Cost Avoidance

« Back to Glossary Index

Cost avoidance is spending that would have happened but no longer needs to, such as a planned hire that is not made because automation absorbed the extra work. It differs from a cost saving, which reduces spending that is already in the budget. Cost avoidance is harder to evidence because the cost never appears, so it needs a clear record of what was planned and why it was not needed.
